Current 8th Grade Project
Eighth graders are currently working on Identity Plaster Cast sculptures inspired by Ben Jones work. Each student will create a plaster cast of their arm or face that they then paint with symbols to express who they are. Every element of the sculpture should express different aspects of the students personality, hobbies, likes and cultural identity.

Linoleum Block Printmaking
The students will use animals as their inspiration for this project. The animal portrait project focuses on recreating visual texture in their drawing using animals as their inspiration. The students will work from an image of an animal that they chose and will then try to recreate that animals image focusing on the texture of the fur or skin. Their drawing will then be transfered to linoleum block which they will carve. Once the carving is complete they will create an edition of 4 prints in the Pop Art style of Andy Warhol.

Monochromatic Portraits
The students will be creating self portraits using a monochromatic color scheme. This is a multiple step process that will begin by learning about the artist Chuck Close (see attached documents) the students will watch a video on chuck close and why he uses a grid. Then they will read a short bio on the artist and answer reflective questions. The next phase is for the students to take a digital photo to use as the self portrait. They will then go into the computer lab and alter the photograph in Corel to create a posterize effect that only has 7 levels of greyscale color. They will then use that image as a guide for their self portrait. They will paint a 7 color monchromatic value scale in the color of their choice then draw a 1 inch grid on their portrait printout. They will use this grid as a quide to enlarge their image. Then following the value scale they created they will then paint their protrait.

Next 8th Grade Project...
8th Grade 2012 Class Project
This year the 8th graders did a school project where they created silhoutes of different PE activities in the school gym. This was a year long project with all 8th grade classes participating. First quarter students came up with the concept and design. Second quarter did action photographs of each other playing the various sports and then turned those photographs into silhouetes using photo imaging software. 3rd quarter drew the designs onto the gym walls and 4th quarter painted them. This was a huge success and gave the students a since of ownership in the school. One student said " this leaves a little bit of me behind that I can come back to and see in the future."
